Mayor's Benefit Gala raises $43,351 for the Utica Safe Schools

The March 23 Mayor’s Benefit Gala at the Radisson Hotel-Utica Centre raised $43,351 for the Utica Safe
Schools Healthy Students Partnership.
The nonprofit works with area school districts, serving more than 2,000 students through anti-bullying, academic and behavioral programs.
Mayor Robert Palmieri and his wife, Susan, announced the award at a news conference Wednesday morning at the Underground Café on Washington Street.
The Underground Café is one of the places Utica Safe Schools conducts after-school events for students, said Executive Director Anne Lansing.
“We offer voice, art, things that aren’t always offered at the high school,” she said. “We offer the things they’re interested in.”
The event was a great success and the organization provides a key support system for some of the area’s youth, said Susan Palmieri.
“It’s mind-boggling the grasp they have on the issues facing some of the community’s students,” she said.
Money still is coming in and the city deserves credit for stepping up to help the area’s students, Mayor Palmieri said.
Last year’s ball raised $62,475 for two causes: the Stevens-Swan Humane Society and the Children’s Museum of History, Science and Technology.
