Ilion, N.Y. —Congressman Richard Hanna was the keynote speaker for Herkimer County HealthNet’s second annual Creating Healthy Places Recognition Luncheon at Francesca’s Banquets and Catering on Friday.
The event recognized the commitment of farmers’ markets, municipalities, schools and nonprofit organizations in improving parks, playgrounds and trails, fostering healthy eating and enhancing places for physical activity.
“We are honored to have Congressman Richard Hanna as our keynote speaker,” said Adam Hutchinson, executive director of Herkimer County HealthNet. “His leadership on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and Northeast Agriculture Caucus aligns with the activities and initiatives that we are working on here in Herkimer County in an effort to combat obesity, type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases.”
“Herkimer County HealthNet is a wonderful program that helps to create a lifestyle that might not be offered otherwise and because of organizational and community efforts, healthy opportunities are available for everyone,” said Hanna. “When people are severely impacted by the economy it’s volunteers who make a difference and the people here today are the ones helping others understand how to live a healthier lifestyle.”
Herkimer County HealthNet Grant Coordinator Alison Swartz said Creating Healthy Places in Herkimer County is funded by a five-year grant from the state Department of Health, administered by Herkimer County HealthNet.
“The focus is to prevent obesity and type 2 diabetes in Herkimer County,” she said.
In addition, Swartz added Herkimer County HealthNet has partnered with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Herkimer County and takes direction from Herkimer County HealthNet’s Wellness Committee in an effort to provide the necessary resources to create healthier places to live, work, play and learn.
