Restore Opportunity Now (RON) Campaign Updates  

As you may know, NYCON is supporting and participating in the Restore Opportunity Now campaign.  

Restore Opportunity Now is a statewide effort calling for crucial investments and systemic changes to strengthen New York's nonprofit human services sector. From streamlining and legitimizing state contracting so that it is in line with fair federal rules, to revisiting existing contracts amid state-wide wage increases, there are plenty of mutually beneficial ways the state can continue to help the nonprofit community positively impact quality of life for all New Yorkers.

The proposed  Executive Budget, while acknowledging the importance of human services, unfortunately provided little in the way of strengthening the organizations and the sector responsible for lifting families out of poverty. 

If you haven't already, we encourage those who support these goals to maximize our voices by joining the more than 340 organizations in the campaign. Click here. 

We also encourage you to inform your board about the Restore Opportunity Now Campaign and ask them to send their own letter to Governor Cuomo in support of the initiative (also send a copy to restoreopportunity@gmail.com for a bulk re-delivery to the Governor). Please see sample language here.

A CPA Who Makes it Count for Nonprofits

2013 Michael H. Urbach, CPA Community Builders Award Winner Announced Jeremy Noble is a CPA Who Makes it Count for Nonprofits!  Jeremy Noble, CPA of Latham, NY is the 2013 recipient of the Michael H. Urbach, CPA Community Builders Award. The New York Council of Nonprofits, Inc. (NYCON) and the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA) co-sponsor the tenth annual award. The award recognizes exemplary achievements of a certified public accountant who serves on the board(s) of directors of charitable organizations. Jeremy Noble, CPA of Latham, NY is the 2013 recipient of the Michael H. Urbach, CPA Community Builders Award. Mr. Noble joined Tully Rinckey PLLC as the Chief Financial Officer in 2007 and has since played a key role in managing the firm's growth by providing critical analysis for various opportunities, implementing efficiency and cost-savings strategies, strengthening internal controls, and managing and forecasting cash flow. In addition to his career, Mr. Noble extends his financial insight far beyond the walls of Tully Rinckey, as he strongly believes in community service. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accounts and the NYSSCPA. Mr. Noble previously served as the President of the Northeast Chapter of NYSSCPA and also held the positions of President-elect, Vice-President, Treasurer and Chair of the Young CPAs Committee. Bob VanZetta, LCSW, Executive Director of Family & Child Service of Schenectady, said in endorsing Mr. Noble's nomination for this award that he "found Jeremy to be hardworking, thorough, conscientious, generous and supportive...and entirely engaged in the matters of the Agency." Of Mr. Noble's six (6) years of service on the Family & Child Service of Schenectady's Board of Directors, he aided in the organization's growth; reduced ballooning expenses; improved cash flow; and acted as Chairperson for a fundraising event. He also served as the Treasurer from 2006-2010 and President from 2010-2011. Mr. Noble's leadership, encouragement and knowledge are valued in the regional communities he helps. Some of the additional organizations that have had the pleasure of being one of the beneficiaries of Mr. Noble's volunteerism and leadership include acting as Treasurer of Not So Common Players, Inc; Treasurer of Schenectady County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SCPA); Captain of the SCPA's Humane Law Enforcement Division; and Treasurer of Early Care & Learning Council. Not So Common Players, Inc. remarked that Mr. Noble's leadership aided them in obtaining grants of at least $50,000 annually for productions, equipment and administrative expenses; as well as be the driving force to the formation of the entity and obtaining 501(c)(3) status. Mr. Noble has also volunteered on and off stage since 2002, performing in numerous productions, working backstage and set building. Foundation Center Launches Free Search Tool Nonprofits Gain a Powerful New Fundraising Research Tool New York, NY — September 16, 2013. The Foundation Center, the leading source of information about philanthropy worldwide, has launched Foundation Directory Online (FDO)Free, an online tool that dramatically expands public access to the Center's authoritative collection of foundation information. At no cost, users can search the basic profiles and IRS Forms 990-PF of nearly 90,000 grantmakers, less than 7 percent of which have web sites of their own. This resource benefits the entire social sector by putting critical data at anyone's fingertips. FDO Free is the newest member of the Center's premier Foundation Directory Online suite of fundraising research tools, which provide even deeper access to a wealth of detailed, structured grantmaking information that successful grantseekers have relied upon for decades. With FDO Free, users can search for grantmaking foundations and find their contact information, fields of interest, financial data, and program priorities. The Center has also released an FDO Free search "widget" that can be embedded on any web site to further widen access. Unique to this new tool is how it enables users to search by keyword across the entire text of the IRS Forms 990-PF for all independent grantmaking foundations. "While the IRS may someday make foundations' 990 returns available in machine-readable open format," said Bradford K. Smith, the Foundation Center's president, "‘someday’ isn’t soon enough for the millions of nonprofit organizations who are tackling the world’s most pressing problems.
